Wispy Clouds

Wispy Clouds
When I first started learning to paint clouds, like many novices, I thought clouds were white.  I was instructed to put yellow in my clouds, or more of an ochre color.  I remember saying, "The clouds look polluted!"  I wanted them to look "pure".  Now,  I can put almost any color in the clouds, as I have done here, The combination of colors, and the brilliant blue,  doesn't make them look like I painted them near a factory.

Puffy Cloud

While painting outdoors, I found myself last week, looking around not knowing what to paint. So I looked up, and saw some beautiful clouds!

Pecking Order

This is the last chicken painting (for awhile anyways) I have to say, actually, that it was pretty inspiring to go back through the farm pictures.  I was inspired by a few other animals we had that I might paint as well! I'll keep you posted on that.  For now.. you can see more of my work at www.janicewarriner.com

Another Hen

I feel like a magician, and I just keep pulling these chickens out of a black hat! When will it end?

Farm Fresh

This was one of the chickens that came at the post office, I think it was a Leghorn, but can't quite recall.   This poor guy ended up losing his leg in the winter.  Chickens apparently do not know to lift their feet off the ground when they become cold.  I know, it is kind of nasty.  He did end up being ok. and went on to live a long life.  My son invented a prosthetic leg for him and my brother in law, who is an expert welder actually built the leg for him.  Of course, it didn't work out for him and he just hopped around on one leg. Here is a picture of the engineered leg.

Little Red Hen

Little Red Hen

This was one of about 20 chickens I got in the mail! Yes, I ordered them on line, and they came shipped in a box! They called me at the post office - because they had to be picked up right away of course- I came down, and I could hear the peeping inside the box.  As soon as I got back to the farm, I put them under a heat lamp and they all calmed down, huddling together.

Marshmallow Chicken

Marshmalow Chicken
6 by 6 acrylic on wood panel
available!
This is not really the appropriate breed name of this chicken, however, we bought two of these little roosters at the auction.  The are solid black with this miniature white marshmallow thingy on the sides of their heads, so I started calling them marshmallow chickens!

Having chickens was an interesting experience, we had so many hens roaming our 5 acres, that we would find eggs almost anywhere! The funniest places, were when Cam would start to do some work, and he would find an egg in a hard hat, or his tool box.

Chicken Craze! Chicken Painting #1

About 5 years ago, my family lived on a small acreage.  It's a good thing we moved to Colorado, because I would've probably ended up on animal hoarders.  For Mothers day, I got 3 lambs,  for my birthday, we went to a chicken auction, where we got over 20 chickens and roosters.  For Easter I got 2 twin lambs that needed to be bottle fed...should I keep going? Because I could!  Getting 24 baby chicks in the mail ..yes the post office was especially exciting!  Anyways, someone asked me to paint her some paintings of chickens so I got out our farm pics and started going through them.  I  ended up going on a chicken painting  craze!

Love Song

finished Painting after 1 hr.

The painting today is larger, 16 by 16 inches.  I used acrylic on a wood panel I have cut at the hardware store and then I gesso with a roller.  Today I toned the board with a pink-ish hue, you can see in the initial sketch.  I sketched everything out with cobalt blue. For me it is an unusual color to draw in, but wanted to experiment today.

After the initial compsition, I could see it was  a bit boring, so I decided to re-arrange my roses so that they spilled out towards the edge of the painting.  Yes, they are fresh roses and real oranges! The color and shapes are always more interesting to me than using fake, although, I have used fake.  I'd go broke if I bought fresh flowers/fruit everytime I did a still life.  Cam just happened to buy me these this week. (thanks Cam!... but he doesn't read my blog posts anyways!)

Winter Roses

Winter Roses
8 by 10
I painted this still life set up with acrylics in my studio this morning.  The color of the creamer vase, is not accurate to this photo, it's shown much more purple, but I'm not able to capture the color correctly with the camera.  At any rate, it's a good 1 hr. study. I've been in a "rut" lately unable to break through, so I've just decided to go ahead anyways.  Painting timed studies helps me to get through.  It limits what I see in front of me to the bare essentials and I wanted a lot of color and brushstroke to show through with this painting.

Yellow Romance

Yellow Romance
6 by 6 acrylic on birch wood

I started out with the panel toned in red, you can see it coming through, quite a bit in the painting. As I layered the paint, I used different strokes, over top each other to allow the colors to show through.   I am tempted to go back in and add more detail to the flowers, but it's such a small, piece, done on a "first chance" I don't know if what I really want is more detail.

Just For Fun

This painting looks practically the same as yesterdays, but, although similar, it is a whole new painting! Done in acrylics, trying to catch the vibrancy in just shapes, and darks and lights, leaving out the details.

Flower Bouquet

My focus and intention here was on creating a very loose and abstract flower arrangement, focusing on shapes, shadows-darks and lights, using a lot of color on this relatively small panel.
